In this concert, the Bartók and Ligeti works will invite us to experience a "cosmic disorientation," a total reinterpretation of all our previous knowledge, thanks to Bartók and Ligeti’s "micro" and "macrocosms." Although Bartók's Mikrokozmosz series, comprising more than one hundred and fifty pieces, was originally written for pedagogical purposes—to support his son Péter’s piano studies—it encapsulates the essence of Bartók's music. To truly study Bartók's oeuvre with the depth it deserves, one must start with these works, as they offer a glimpse into Bartók’s inexhaustible inventiveness.
The program, which presents a coherent connection between Bartók and Ligeti’s works, will feature twelve Mikrokozmosz pieces. Ligeti’s piano etudes are extremely challenging, comparable to, and in many cases surpassing the difficulty of the great Romantic composers’ (concert) etudes. Ligeti cites Chopin and Liszt as primary sources of inspiration, as well as numerous influences from the Far East (such as gamelan music), African tribal music, and the works of Conlon Nancarrow and Thelonious Monk. He particularly emphasizes the experience of tactile sensation and the "moment of danger" for the performer.
On this concert, we will hear eight etudes from Ligeti’s three-volume series. In addition to the etudes, Ligeti will be represented by an early cycle, Musica Ricercata, featuring the Hungarian-tinged 5th (Lamentoso), the 8th evoking Balkan folk music, the 9th (Béla Bartók in memoriam) paying tribute to Bartók, and the 11th (Omaggio a Girolamo Frescobaldi) honoring the Italian Baroque master Girolamo Frescobaldi.
