At the fourth chamber evening of the MiraTone Festival, we honor the memory of Josef Suk, who passed away 150 years ago. Suk was a contemporary and student of Dvořák, and as a violinist and a member of the highly successful Bohemian Quartet, he approached the genres of string quartet and string orchestra with great expertise. The concert will begin with a piece based on an old religious hymn that prays to the Czech patron saint, St. Wenceslaus, for the prosperity of the Czech people. This string orchestra version of the piece will be performed by the professors and students of the MiraTone Academy, which runs concurrently with the festival, under the direction of the festival founder and director, Miranda Liu.
The festival will feature yet another composition of significant historical importance: Schubert’s string quintet, which is often regarded by experts as one of the greatest chamber music works in the repertoire.
Among Suk's former teachers was Anton Bennewitz, whose name is carried by the festival’s guest ensemble: the Bennewitz Quartet will perform Schubert's masterpiece, the String Quintet in C Major, with the collaboration of cellist Adolfo Gutierrez Arenas, who was born in Spain and has since achieved an unparalleled international career.
